Choosing the right swimming pool for you and your home is a big decision. If you’ve been on the fence about fiberglass because of some misinformation, we’re here to help set the record straight. Here are five myths about fiberglass pools, and why they’re totally busted to help you find the absolute best pool to meet all of your entertainment, fitness, and relaxation needs.

1. Floating Fiberglass

Sounding like something from a Sci Fi movie, there is a myth “floating” around that fiberglass pools will pop, or float. This likely came about from neglected or improperly installed swimming pools, which can exhibit this phenomenon. However, if your fiberglass pool has been properly installed, is never completely empty, and is well maintained, you can rest assured your swimming pool will stay perfectly in place for many years to come.

2. You Can’t Have a Beautiful Fiberglass Pool

When fiberglass pools first came onto the scene, they were considered an affordable option, and their designs portrayed a cheaper style. Today, there is a vast selection of stunning styles, colors, and designs at your disposal that create a fantastic aquatic addition to your backyard with special features that make the starship Enterprise look simple and outdated.

3. Warm Weather Only

Fiberglass pools have been the victim of a terrible rumor! They have been described as only being good for warm weather climates. It is believed by many that a fiberglass swimming pool will freeze, crack, and break. Fortunately, this is not the case. Remember in physics class, you learned that when water freezes it expands. In this case, instead of ice putting pressure on the shell of the pool, it will slightly spill over the edge in the event of severely cold weather. Whew!

Bonus Tip — No matter what pool type you have, you should always winterize your pool and plumbing to keep it (and its components) safe.

4. No Customization Options

Because fiberglass pools are factory made, it’s a common misconception that they are extremely limited in their design options. While it’s true designs aren’t limitless, you can find fiberglass pools in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and depths. You’ll also enjoy adding some custom additions like water features, LED lights, wading areas, tanning ledges, and more.

5. Fiberglass is More Expensive

One of the most popular myths about fiberglass pools? That they are more expensive than other swimming pool options, such as vinyl liner. The truth? The costs will always vary based on a number of factors such as:

  • Installation
  • Size
  • Features

And, even if a vinyl liner is cheaper upfront, oftentimes they cost more in the long run. When comparing prices, it’s wise to look at the long-term costs of running the pool, as well as the chemicals and maintenance involved over the course of at least 10 years. In fact, owning a fiberglass pool can save you thousands throughout its lifetime, over a pool with a cheaper price tag.
