You don’t know what you don’t know. Most people in the market for a fiberglass pool aren’t pool experts, but lucky for you, at Mastercraft Pool & Spa we are! We are here to tell you what to look for when choosing a company to install your fiberglass pool.
What Are the Main Problems of an Improper Pool Installation?
Backfill Material
The backfill material is critical to installing a solid fiberglass pool. The “fill-in” material fills the space between the pool shell and the ground. Sand is not a good option; it isn’t stable enough to guarantee that things won’t shift around. We use crushed stone for backfill, and it’s more stable and sets you up for long-term success.
Pipes
Speaking of plumbing, leaking pipes are often a problem for older pools. Two things should be done in every fiberglass pool installation to help prevent leaks.
First, rigid pipes should be used. A flexible pipe is easier to install since it bends around curves but isn’t rated for underground use. So, rigid pipes are necessary even if they require more effort.
Next, pipes shifting can loosen connections, presenting more opportunities for leaks. We prevent this by securing the pipes to the shell of the pool. With the pipes attached to the pool itself, there should be very little room for movement, thus fewer opportunities for leaks.
Connection
Another problem area for fiberglass pools can be where the concrete meets the pool shell, and this connection needs to be extremely strong to prevent settling or shifting. We use a 12” x 12″ rebar grid that we install into the top of the pool shell. The rod gets fully encased in the concrete poured around the pool’s perimeter, essentially locking everything in place.
Water Removal
You may need to drain your pool at some point, and it is not suitable for the water to settle around the pool. If groundwater is known or present, we take care of that problem by installing a sump pipe at pool installation time. By taking care of water removal with the original installation, you can ensure that future groundwater isn’t going to shift or alter anything that was initially installed.
Knowledge is Power
Now that you know how it should be done, you will be better prepared to ensure that you get a properly installed fiberglass pool.
Choose a Reputable Company
Choosing a reputable company is one of the most important things you can do to ensure that your pool will be installed properly. Find reviews online to see what other people are saying about their experience with the company. With Mastercraft Pool & Spa, you can be assured that your pool will be installed exactly how it should be.
