With every new purchase comes new questions, and hot tubs are no exception. Even if you already have experience caring for a pool, hot tubs are a whole different ball game. So, it’s important that you know how to tell if your hot tub needs service.

Does Your Hot Tub Smell … Different?

Hot tubs are going to smell. That’s just a fact of life. Typically, this can be caused by adding too few chemicals, or by adding too many chemicals. It’s easy to figure out the cause of these smells: just test your water. If the chemical balance is too high or too low, you’ll know right away and can fix it yourself.

But if your chemical levels seem fine or you just can’t seem to fix them and the odor is still there, something’s wrong. And odds are, you won’t be able to fix it yourself. Your filters may not be working properly, there could be a clog, or it could be something else entirely. Regardless of the underlying cause, though, if you can’t get rid of the odor yourself, your hot tub needs service.

Is There Something Wrong with Your Hot Tub’s Mechanics?

Even with the highest quality hot tub, there will occasionally be glitches. It’s just like everything else you buy; it’s not invincible. So, at some point, your hot tub may have mechanical issues. These could include:

  • control panel malfunction
  • jet malfunction
  • heater malfunction
  • and a variety of other electric issues

As you know, water and electronics do not work together well. So, if you have any issue with your hot tub that could be an electrical issue, your hot tub needs service. Do not attempt this yourself. Do not pass “Go”. Do not collect $200. The risk of harm is not worth trying to fix these issues yourself.

How Long Has it Been Since Your Hot Tub was Serviced?

Sometimes you get really lucky, and you don’t have any issues (real or imagined) with your hot tub for a while. It’s important to keep track of the last time your hot tub was serviced, because it does need a regular “check up”, just like you.

At least once a year, your hot tub needs a professional tune up. During this service, hot tub service technicians will come to your home and just check out everything with your hot tub. They’ll check the mechanics, check for leaks, and basically give everything a close look to make sure there are no issues so that your hot tub can continue to function perfectly.

It may be tempting to skip this step if your hot tub is fine, but it’s really important to get this tune up at least once a year. By getting your hot tub checked out while it’s fine, any issues can be caught before they become bigger issues. For example, the technicians may find a crack in your hot tub and repair it before it becomes a leak.

It’s not too difficult to learn how to tell if your hot tub needs service. And whether it needs service due to an issue or just a yearly tune up, we’ll be here to help you at Mastercraft Pool & Spa.
