Idaho law requires at least a 48’’ fence around your residential pool. However, a Latham Automatic Safety Cover is permitted to act as your barrier fence. The overwhelming majority of our customers choose the safety cover option. If you opt for a fence instead (or already have one before you get your pool), your barrier fence should also have a self-closing, self-locking gate to prevent small children from entering the pool area without adult supervision. You can even install alarms on your gate to go off when the door is opened without your knowledge. Teach the kids not to play near drains and always have the appropriate safety drain covers.
Always watch children in the pool, even if they know how to swim. It only takes a second of inattention to cause an issue. Keep your phone near, for emergencies only. And, if you lose track of a child you’re supervising, check the pool first. Look after younger kids who can’t swim, or don’t swim well, keeping them within arms reach.
Learning how to swim is one of the best skills you can teach your children — not just for water safety, but to open doors for adventure all throughout life. This summer is also a great time for you and the older children to learn CPR. You can find free online classes, or look for a certified learning opportunity in your area.
