Does pool shopping have you asking, “Is a shotcrete pool low or high maintenance?” If you are deciding what type of material to choose for your new pool, the level of maintenance required is an important consideration. We explained why we install shotcrete and fiberglass pools instead of vinyl-liner pools. As you narrow your pool search based on maintenance needs, let’s break down what is required to care for a shotcrete pool.

What is a shotcrete pool?

A shotcrete pool is a type of concrete pool. Shotcrete pools are made by spraying a concrete mixture through a hose onto a prepared surface which includes steel framing. This type of concrete pool can be finished with plaster, decorative tiles, or even custom rock formations.

Is a shotcrete pool low or high maintenance?

When you properly care for your shotcrete pool, it can last for decades. Many shotcrete pool reviews feature families celebrating their shotcrete pools that have passed through generations. To maintain your shotcrete pool, you need to perform different maintenance activities daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally, and as necessary over the life of your pool.

How is a shotcrete pool maintained?

Daily, clear fallen plant life or other debris from the pool’s surface and floor. Clear debris from your pool as soon as you are able. This helps maintain your water balance and clarity and keep your pool walls clean of unwanted growth. Moreover, run your pool filter around 8-10 hours a day for proper circulation.

Weekly, brush the walls and floor of the pool to remove any buildup. After brushing, vacuum the dislodged debris and algae brushed from the walls and floor. Do this more often if necessary. Furthermore, check the chlorine, pH balance, and alkalinity in the pool every week. Check twice a week during the busier season or if you use your pool daily. Also, weekly, add algaecide to your pool to keep it clean and clear of algae buildup.

Check your pool filter for cleaning and upkeep several times a month. This may vary depending on your filter type, so consult your owner’s manual.

Monthly, check calcium hardness in your pool. Shotcrete pools also may need resurfacing around every 7-10 years to keep a fresh pool floor and make your pool last.
