Congratulations! You’ve decided to get a new pool. A new pool is a large investment, so before you get started, you’ll need to figure out a budget. To help you establish your new pool budget, we have 4 things to consider that not everyone thinks about.

Paying for Your Pool

The first step in establishing your pool budget is figuring out how much money you’ll actually need to pay for a new pool. According to Forbes, an average inground pool costs around $35,000. However, this will vary depending on your dealer, the type of pool you choose, and any extra features you want to add.

For example, a fiberglass pool is going to have a higher initial cost than a vinyl liner pool. But, a vinyl liner pool will need to have the liner replaced every 7-10 years. So, you’ll need to think about the initial costs vs the long-term costs when determining your budget.

Maintaining Your Pool

Your pool budget doesn’t end once you’ve bought your pool. You’ll also have to budget monthly amounts for pool maintenance costs. These costs include:

  • chemicals to maintain your pool water
  • electricity costs to run your filter and heater
  • water costs to fill up your pool
  • occasional professional maintenance needs
  • and extras

All of these costs depend on how much you use your pool. If you use it often, you’ll need more chemicals, electricity, water, and professional maintenance, and vice versa. When you’re first establishing your pool budget, it’s a good idea to budget more than you think you’ll need. Once you get a couple of months of pool usage under your belt, you can adjust your budget to reflect your actual costs.

Add a Little Extra

For many people, getting a new pool doesn’t end with just the pool. So, you’ll need to account for these things when you’re establishing a new pool budget. Some of these extra items may include:

  • water features
  • a hot tub
  • patio furniture
  • slides
  • recreational games
  • automatic pool cover
  • and more

But, the extras don’t just stop with the fun stuff. You’ll also need some safety features, like storage to lock up your pool chemicals, a skimmer net to scoop out the leaves, and a vacuum to clean the bottom and sides of your pool. All of these are items that people typically don’t think about when budgeting for a pool, so make sure to keep them on your list.

Find Financing

A new pool is a large investment, and not everyone has the money to pay for it all up front. So, the last item of our 4 things to consider is to find financing. Financing can help you with most of your pool costs, like the initial pool installation and your extras. Then, you’ll just have one monthly payment to keep track of to cover all of those, and all you need to worry about after that is your maintenance costs.
